Mission and History

The mission of Gateway Community Development Corporation is to revitalize the three municipalities of Mount Rainier, Brentwood and North Brentwood. We believe that healthy, safe, attractive and vibrant communities are enriched by the presence of artists and arts organizations. We embrace diversity and environmental stewardship as assets. Gateway CDC uses civic engagement, arts resources and partnerships to advance commercial and residential development. We expand programs and services to residents and business owners in our communities throughout the Gateway Arts and Entertainment District.

Gateway Community Development Corporation (Gateway CDC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership planning and development organization formed by the residents of North Brentwood, Brentwood, and Mount Rainier in 1997. Gateway CDC was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Gateway Arts District. This initiative brought together artists, residents, business owners, government agencies, and elected officials to create a shared vision for a healthy, safe, and vibrant community enriched by the arts, culture, and entertainment.

Gateway CDC uses civic engagement, arts resources, and leveraged partnerships to advance commercial and residential development, and expand programs and services to residents and surrounding communities.

Through combined resources and a shared vision, the municipalities of Gateway CDC devised a joint revitalization strategy promoting arts resources in the community:
Mount Rainier - Affordable live/work units for artists in The Artists’ Lofts/ArtSpace and The Housing Initiatives Partnership/HIP Artist Housing.
Brentwood - The Gateway Arts Center at Brentwood, providing a community visual arts center with galleries and affordable studio space. The ezStorage facility providing studio, gallery, and commercial space.
North Brentwood – The future site of the Prince Georges African-American Museum and Cultural Center.
