Artspace

The first of the Gateway projects, Mount Rainier Artist Lofts, created 44 units of affordable housing for individuals and their families in a new four-story building one block from the District of Columbia border. This $11.7 million project, the first Artspace live/work project involving new construction exclusively, also contains 7,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor.

Residents of the Mount Rainier Artist Lofts enjoy the same amenities associated with historic warehouse lofts, including high ceilings and large windows, in an energy-efficient new building. The project's affordable rents and proximity to public transportation, as well as Mount Rainier's small-town charm, make it even more attractive.

Brentwood Arts Exchange

The Brentwood Arts Exchange, located within the Gateway Arts Center at Brentwood, is dedicated to presenting and promoting the visual arts. It features a vibrant gallery space, a contemporary Fine Craft Boutique, and a dynamic arts learning classroom and meeting space. The Brentwood Arts Exchange is a place for people of all ages to meet, engage and learn about art, purchase one-of-a-kind craft objects, and explore new creative talents.

Developed by Housing Initiative Partnership, Inc., HIP, the project provides housing opportunities for low- and moderate- income residents. HIP's Artists’ housing inhabits a formerly blighted building, helping to transform an inner beltway community, and improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. The result is an affordable residence that incorporates numerous green building design features and provides vibrant studio spaces for the resident artists.

Prince Georges County Gateway Arts District Management Team

The Gateway Arts District Management Team is Prince Georges County’s appointed operating group serving in a state-mandated capacity to provide marketing, planning, and strategic oversight for the County’s Arts District. The team is comprised of critical stakeholders within the District: The District 2 County Council Member, the Mayors of the four member municipalities, local artist designees, the two Community Development Corporations that facilitate economic development in the Gateway Arts District, Maryland National Capitol Park & Planning Commission, the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority, the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center, and the Anacostia Trails Heritage Association.

The Gateway Arts District has been a tremendous success. Not only has it created a strong identifiable arts presence in the County, it has increased the assessable tax base by $240 million through new development associated with the District and has revived interest in the urban edge of Prince George’s County. The Gateway Arts District is now poised to become a destination for art-driven activities and even further economic development.
